musiconnects 2018 fall appeal
"I felt proud of myself..."
is what a 3rd grade viola student said to describe how learning to play
an instrument changed him. Each year our students answer questions
like, “Does playing music change you as a person?” The answers reflect
the positive impact our programming has on young people in Mattapan - “it helps me to relate to other people,” “I feel happy and alive!” “it
makes me less stressed,” “it makes me happier and more relaxed,” and “after playing the instrument, I feel better about myself.” By making a
gift to musiConnects today, you make it possible for our youth to grow
into proud and productive community members and empathetic
As we enter our 12th year, it is so heartening to see our students
become better musicians while also forming strong friendships with
their teachers and each other. musiConnects has provided hundreds of Boston youth the opportunity to not only learn to read and play music, but also to gain confidence, employ collaborative thinking, and be
engaged in the world around them.
Our seven Resident Musicians not only teach and mentor, but also
perform free throughout Mattapan and the surrounding neighborhood,
in everyday locations like the health center, the post office and even theproduce section of the grocery store. Stay tuned to hear the results of
our Mattapan Collaborative Arts Project - where Mattapan artists will
collaborate with our musicians to create an experimental performance merging genres.
These days it can feel as if we have no way to make a difference. When you support our work, you give our Resident Musicians a way to use
their skills to bring about meaningful change. You also provide a young person with an instrument, a caring teacher, a reliable mentor, and the
self-esteem it takes to become a healthy, confident and creative
member of society.
