Teaching, learning, and sharing a musical language

musiConnects education: philosophy and applications

Picture
The Boston Public Quartet believes that a fruitful approach to fostering a collaborative music community is to treat music as a second language which enables teachers and learners to communicate questions, answers, ideas and needs. As we engage in ever more complex musical conversations, our ultimate goal is to guide each learner toward fluency, artistic independence and keen responsiveness to the musical world, within and beyond the classical tradition.

"Learning is to be inquiry-based. The materials are not the curriculum--the connection between the student, the teacher, and their areas of interest becomes the curriculum."

--from Whole Language and Music-Listening Instruction by Delta Cavner and Elizabeth Gould

a whole language approach to music

Learning any language takes time, a safe atmosphere, and happens more readily when the learners have ample opportunity for practice in all areas of the language. That is why musiConnects students are given weekly opportunities to not only hone their instrumental technique but also to develop and make meaningful connections between reading, composition, improvisation, and listening.

social dynamics and authentic musical communication

Just as in learning a second language, learning music requires regular engagement in a wide variety of settings. That is why we offer our students weekly experiences in three distinct social dynamics in music: one-on-one lessons, chamber music groups, and large group "music circle".
