Employment Opportunities

musiConnects is currently seeking two dedicated, passionate, and collaborative teaching artists/performers to serve as Resident Musicians in the upcoming 2020-21 season: one (1) violist and one (1) cellist. We invite you to learn more about the positions below, and send all inquiries to jobs@musiconnects.org.

About us:
musiConnects is fueling the growth of an intimate, vibrant, musical community in Boston by providing free and low-cost music education programs focused on chamber music. Our mission is to model and teach self-expression, peer leadership and community development through the transformative power of chamber music. Our resident professional musicians, in addition to their concert schedules, act as the teaching and administrative staff for weekly programming in schools and community centers.

musiConnects is an equal opportunity employer, and seeks to build an organization that reflects the diversity of the Boston neighborhoods in which we work.  Learn more about us: http://www.musiconnects.org

Resident Musician: Viola
musiConnects seeks a violist to join its team of dedicated Resident Musicians, who perform in a community-focused chamber music series and teach in an innovative educational residency.  This position begins on September 1, 2020.

Boston-based musiConnects, founded in 2007, exists to “model and teach self-expression, peer leadership and community development through the transformative power of chamber music.”  musiConnects encompasses two thriving educational initiatives -- the Residency Program, offered in partnership with schools & community centers in Mattapan; and the Roslindale Community Program, based at the musiConnects studio in Roslindale Village -- and a full season of accessible live performances featuring our staff of Resident Musicians.

Our committed Resident Musicians teach private lessons and chamber music in our Mattapan Residency Program. This program emphasizes the development of extra-musical skills such as teamwork, confidence, collaborative problem-solving, and community building, while simultaneously centering musical accomplishment and joy in progress. Some Resident Musicians take on additional private teaching in our affordable, tuition-based Roslindale Community Program.  The Resident Musician staff - in rotating configurations - prepare chamber music repertoire at a high level, which is then presented in free, accessible live performances throughout the neighborhoods served, including Mattapan, Roslindale, Dorchester, and surrounding areas.

musiConnects performances feature various configurations of personnel throughout the season.

Responsibilities
  • Rehearse and perform in community chamber music events (approx. 10 concerts/year)
  • Rehearse and perform in organizational outreach/fundraising events (approx. 5-7 concerts/year)
  • Teach individual ½ hour lessons to elementary- and middle-school aged viola/violin students (approx. 4 hours/week depending on registration numbers)
  • Teach small ensemble/chamber music classes (approx. 1-2 hours/week)
  • Actively participate in 4-5 student performances per year
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Participate in related administrative and planning activities (as assigned)
  • Team-teach in group class settings (ex. Harmony Strings - our orchestra-style improvisation group, mC2 - our teen leadership group, or Beginning Strings - an introductory class for K-2 students) , as assigned, and depending on qualifications.

Qualifications
  • Experience with - and passion for - chamber music as a socially-relevant art form
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working in a collaborative environment
  • Self-motivated, well organized and energetic
  • Ability to communicate and connect with diverse constituencies, including children and families with diverse cultural traditions and expectations
  • Enthusiasm for community-based work
  • Commitment to social justice and community-building, via innovative music education & performance
  • Passion for working with children, especially beginning students
  • Patience and a sense of humor
  • Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in performance, education or equivalent work experience

Schedule: Part-time weekly responsibilities, closely following the academic year at an average of 10 hours/week.  Attendance required at occasional evening and weekend events. Access to a vehicle is encouraged as not all teaching and performance locations are easily accessible.

Salary: $8,000-$10,000 (depending on total hours), paid on a bi-weekly basis.  Benefits are not included. There is an opportunity to earn additional compensation via private teaching in our Roslindale Community Program.
